Reply To: Private rents outside London have risen by a third

Where I live in Eastbourne the price of a one bedroom flat is £900 per month. There are a couple cheaper but anything decent starts at this. Incredible. This is one of the cheaper areas on the South coast. Add on council tax at band B and energy etc and you need around £1500 per month just to pay for housing. Loads of jobs in the town but nearly all at minimum wage.

One of the reason why this has soared ….rarely mentioned by the media…is that the Home Office is quietly renting significant numbers. They pay above LHA levels and will pay a signing on fee. As a result the number of rentals has fallen from a normal average of about 220 in the town to just 50 now.

All I see is rents moving higher and higher. The demand for rentals is extraordinary
