We currently have a claim where we are taking the highest non dep deduction for a son who is in the Army but living in Barracks.

The claimant states that he has been away on active duty but cannot provide evidence to prove it from his chain of command.

    Any advice please?

Onus is on the claimant to show that the highest NDD is not applicable. It may be helpful to suggest that contact details for the son are obtained and the latter could then detail what has or has not taken place but there;s no obligation to do so. Very unlikely that anyone in the sons position could get someone above them to confirm the when and where of active duty. Simply not the done thing within the forces for obvious reasons. Absent that then the highest NDD applies. The barest of information from the son would ordinarily suffice unless it contained obvious contradictions etc.

If he’s in Barracks surely thats his normal home?

Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery. The blossom is blighted, the leaf is withered, the god of day goes down upon the dreary scene, and—and in short you are for ever floored.
