As we all know now I am sure, HB can exceed the claimant’s full rent in an LHA case but only by a maximum of £15 a week. This extra £15 doesn’t have a name, and my group at Rochford Council yesterday thought it should have one.

The Regs refer to the “cap rent”, which is defined as the claimant’s personal rent after excluding business accommodation and after apportionment between joint tenants.

The Regs also refer to the “local housing allowance” itself.

Finally, the output at the end of all this is referred to as the “maximum rent (LHA)”.

But the £15 tolerance zone … nothing, it’s just an arithmetical function as things stand.

So Rochford thought it would be a nice idea to invite suggestons from forum members for a snappy name. They came up with “PFP”, which stands for plus fifteen pounds.

    Any other ideas?

On a serious note, does anyone know why it is £15, as I can’t seem to find any reference as to how this figure had been calculated. At that really useful DWP seminar, we were told that most excesses didn’t exceed £20 a week, so why £15?

As to why £15 – my guess is
    “Pick a number………” 😉

Now, now people, don’t forget that Benefit Officers are not “cynical”. We’re realistic…
