Backdating and failure of Support Workers

    Scenario: We have cases where the claimant has mental health problems and unable to make their claim so Support Workers etc do it for them. We are getting lots where there is a long delay in returning forms and they state they did not know or realise this would be a problem. I feel sorry for the claimant who is at no fault but angry that certain people do not do their jobs and expect us just to backdate, clear the rent arrears and bail them out! Do you backdate claims?


    If the support is being provided by the Local Authority, then it would be worth speaking to their manager about the problem. If it’s being provided by an external agency, but funded by Social Services or Supporting people, then again I would let them know. A threat of withdrawal of funding usually does the trick!
