We have been asked the following question:

We are looking to install wifi in one of our projects for the use of our residents. We can do the set-up costs but I was wondering whether the line rental and monthly bills were eligible for HB?

I have looked under the guidance and we could argue either way.

For: communal provision and you have to sign up for it as part of the tenancy (at least for new tenants). TV or radio systems are eligible.

Against: not essential & cable/satellite connections aren’t eligible.

    Any thoughts?

With a view to the future, I would argue that it is essential, because as the Government is stating its wish to make claimant’s claim all welfare benefits via the internet, how can it be said that it is not essential, especially if the tenants have no other means to access the internet. 🙂
