Can information regarding Council Tax be issued to a partner, even though the partner is not named on the account?

I realise that partners are joint and several for liability purposes but if someone is not named on the account surely information cannot be given to them about the account?

From personal experience – my partner called our local Council recently to pay that month’s tax. She had the account number but they wouldn’t tell her what the monthly installment was so she had to guess! She underpaid by £1.00 but luckily they did not send an arrears notice.

I think a common-sense approach is probably best. As long as you are satisfied that you are speaking to the resident partner (which may be difficult to verify if you don’t have their name) you should be able to release limited relevant information.

We would give them the information and also amend the council tax account to make them j/s too.
