I have been contacted by a claimant who is a full time student with children. She says she has been advised that the dependants element of her grant will cease as she has been awarded Child Tax Credit from 7/4/03. This means we will have to amend the student income used to calculate her claim. I hadn’t anticipated this – I knew the dependants elements of I.S. and JSA were being abolished, but from October 2004. I think we will have to do a querymaster on our caseload for any claims with student income and children included. Does anyone know any more information, or a DfE contact to find out if all dependants allowances are automatically removed from April 2004? (even if they havn’t made a Child Tax Credit claim).

I found the answer from our student awards office here in Plymouth – students with a dependants element on their grant get to keep it for the Summer term. From October 2003, it is abolished, but replaced with a ‘parent learning allowance’, which is payable in addition to any claim for Child Tax Credit. So from April to July they can receive both CTC and the dependant’s allowance.
