We have a customer who we have subsequently established is paid direct a community care grant for caring for his children.

We entered this as earned income as we found this income on WURTI but it didnt clarify that it’s a community care grant.

Is it correct to use it as actual wages?

Appears he needs to be receiving a passported beefit to get a grant, and its not treated as income anyway as its for a specific circustance

If you're already signed on to some form of income support, but you're faced with a short-term financial crisis, it might be possible for you to get a Community Care Grant. These are outright grants – not loans – so, if you qualify for one, you won't be expected to pay it back.

    How you qualify

Very importantly, to apply for a Community Care Grant, you already need to be receiving an Employment and Support Allowance, a Jobseeker's Allowance, a Pension credit or Income Support – or be receiving some payment as a result of one of these. You might also qualify if you are moving out of care and if one of these benefits will apply to you within the next six weeks.

Then, you need to show that you have a specific need for the grant.

that was from the jobcentre help website – dwp websit also confirmed the entitlement criteria are that a passported benefit needs to be in payment/ recently ended

These payments have come from the Council for him to look after his childrens care needs.

Prior to this income being found he was on tax credits, superannuation, widows parents allowance.

So i dont think theres a qualifying benefit?

This income has removed all HB/CTR entitlement as its £300+ per week so disregarding it would make a heck of difference.

are the children disabled? if so I think these may be what our authority calls 'direct payments' – paid to the disabled person to employ a carer. they would then be treated as the claimant's earnings

but does he receive the money as a direct payment to pay other carers, or do the caring himself??

if HMRC have details of earnings under his NINO it suggests that he is employed by his children as a carer. the direct payments are paid into a separate bank account in the disabled person's name, and must be used to pay for care. In Wales, an organisation called Diverse Cymru provide a payroll service and would notify HMRC of the wages

He is doing the caring himself.

I think the intial info it was community care grant was a misunderstanding
