We have a Housing Association that employs an outside management company to look after the maintenance/repairs of their external & communal areas. The  Management company obviously charges the Landlord for this service, but the Landlord is asking us to cover this as part of the eligible HB charges – should we pay this? Has anybody else been in this position?

We have a similar set-up here. However, the service charges are broken down into eligible and non-eligible service charges for hb purposes. Eligible charges include charges for the maintenance of communal gardens, fire safety equipment, communal heating and lighting, lifts, door entry systems, children’s play areas, white goods, furniture and rubbish collection.

The ineligble service charges are heating, hot water, support etc.

Universal Credit intends to exclude the existing eligible service charges. Blimey!
