We have been told by HMRC today that they are only allowed to tell us the current award of tax credits and not the amount awarded for any past periods?

Apparently this started 2 weeks ago? Is this right? Have I missed something coz I haven’t read it anywhere!

Thats crazy! Haven’t had cause to ring them within the last 2 weeks so can’t confirm it but where are we supposed to get the prior info from? Haven’t read it anywhere either. 😯

If true, then it’s another death knell for “joined up services”

Just had a chat with an Essex LA – it seems this is for real.

Tax Credits staff have, apparently, been instructed to only give current award details in response to LA enquiries. Any further info will only be given to clmts directly.

As Martin observed, yet another classic example of joined up government.

    [Edit]: partial deletion.

Just spoken to a couple of colleagues and they have rung up several times in the last week and have had no problem getting info going back into ’05. Clearly not all advisors are following the instructions. ❓

I’d imagine it depends who you get.

Their ID check is still very variable when some Tax Credit bods ask for middle names and some do not…varies each time I phone up… 😯

that’s true, another colleague also rang up today and got the information they needed.

we’re just having a discussion in the office now, does anyone know what the tax credit application forms says about sharing information with Local Authorities?

Do you have a SLA with HMRC?

to my knowledge we don’t, not specifically

but have found a renewal form and it states

[quote:1b1d58db30]HM Revenue & Customs is a Data Controller under the Data Protection Act 1998. We hold information for the purposes specified in our notification to the Information Commissioner, including the assessment and collection of tax and duties, the payment of benefits and the prevention and detection of crime, and may use this information for any of them. We may get information about you from others, or we may give information to them.

If we do, it will only be as the law permits to
    • check accuracy of information
    • prevent or detect crime
    • protect public funds.

so doesn’t that mean that they have to tell us past period awards?
