ParticipantI don’t know about distance learning but a couple of years ago I did the technician level on day release. Hard work (and I think for circa 9 months I ceased to be a human being!) but I think it was worth it. I didn’t go on to the full qualification as my LA wouldn’t fund it and I certainly can’t afford it. Who knows in the future though?
If you think it is worth your while go for it!
Do I know what I'm doing? The jury's out on that........................

GuestI didn’t follow the distance learning path for what was the technician course, but I know some who have. I did consider it for the full professional course but I couldn’t go through with it at the time. If you have the discipline and honesty with yourself to study on your own then it’s a good way to do it. I believe from my limited dealings with the distant Learning centre that they are good people who are dedicated to their students. I would also strongly recommend going to the revision week at Keele to ensure that you are on the right track and not missing anything.
Now, I have to go and say all this to my guys before the external study budget dries up…

I did the full qualification on a basis of 3 (long) days in college every 3 months with self study in between.
I won’t pretend it was easy but I did get through without having to resit any papers :23: . I will add that Keele (it was at Caerleon in my day) would be invaluable.
I’m also aware that IRRV have been looking into revamping their qualification so make sure you get some info on that before deciding what you want to do.

GuestThanks v.much for you response on this. I’ll get in touch with IRRV to find out about the re-vamp and maybe it is worth considering holding off for a year!

ParticipantHello,
I did the full professional by distance learning and it was awful. The notes provided are inaccurate in places and they are very overwhelming as they try to cover everything imaginable. It takes way more time than you can ever imagine and if i hadn’t been able to go to the revision weeks i don’t think i would have passed. My local association were reasonable in providing support so i think that helped.
If you are doing it, make sure you negotiate with your employer before commiting about study time and exam leave.
The first year is definitely the worst so perservence is the key.
PM me if you want any more info

ParticipantBit late but I am in year 2 of the Distance Learning qualification so if you are still looking at it and want to know more, please ask!
In all honesty, I have found that I have not studied until the last month or so prior to the exam but have passed all these at the first attempt.
However, I have just handed in my first work based assignment and found that was quite hard work as I do not write reports in my current role.

GuestThanks for that Sharon.
I have received info from IRRV of the new sylabus for studying IRRV and it appears to be less exam based and more work-based work with assignments and work-based learning.
I’m currently looking at other options but have still got the IRRV as my fall back
