ParticipantI have trawled the internet including the link given in A15/06 but cannot find the loan rates for NHS degree students for 06/07. Does anybody know where to find them?
THANKS

ParticipantI was under the impression that students undertaking nursing and midwifery diploma courses were not eligible for student loans and received NHS Bursaries ❓

ParticipantUnfortunately there are 2 types of NHS funded students – those taking degree courses & nursing diploma students. The former get loans as well as bursaries but at a lower rate than “normal” undergraduates. It is these loan rates for 2006/07 I’m after.

ParticipantThese are the figures I obtained from the NHS website:
BASIC RATE BURSARY
The basic rate is £2,908 for students studying in London (£2,367 for those studying elsewhere and £1,936 for those living with their parents).
EXTRA WEEKS ATTENDANCE
For attendance in excess of 30 term-time weeks. The London rate is £98 per extra week. (£76 elsewhere and £51 for students living with their parents).
If attendance is for 45 weeks or more, an allowance for 52 weeks will be paid.
STUDENT LOAN
The means-tested NHS Bursary is not intended to meet all of a student’s day-to-day living costs. Hence a Student Loan is available, at a reduced rate compared with the Student Loan for other degree students:
The full-year loan for students studying in London is £3,030. (There is a lower rate – £2,160 – for students studying outside London, and a third rate – £1,620 – for students living at their parents’ home).
OLDER STUDENTS ALLOWANCE
Payable to students who reached the age of 26 before the first academic year of their course.
It is not payable on top of the Single Parent Addition.
The rates are:
age before first academic year:
26 £416
27 £722
28 £1,071
29+ £1,416DEPENDANTS’ ALLOWANCES
These are payable in respect of:
· husband or wife or unmarried partner in the case of a student aged 25 or over on or before the first day of the academic year
· dependent children
· any other dependant adult who is wholly or mainly financially dependant
This element is means-tested, in that any income of any dependant, nett of certain deductions, is taken into account.
The maximum rates are:
Adult dependant £2,453
First child if no adult dependant £2,453
Child aged under 11 £513
Child aged 11 – 15 £1,026
Child aged 16 – 17 £1,364
Child aged 18 £1,963
SINGLE PARENT ADDITION
Payable to single parents with a dependent child or children. It is not payable in addition to the Older Students’ Allowance.
The rate is £1,211 a year.
CHILDCARE COSTS
Help with childcare is only available for means-tested NHS students, and are the same as they are for other students – i.e. up to £117.30 per week (or up to 85% of actual costs of up to £138 a week) for one child, and up to £205 per week (or up to 85% of actual costs up to £241 a week) for two or more children.
This cannot be claimed if the childcare element of Working Tax Credit has been awarded.
PRACTICE PLACEMENT COSTS
Claims can be made to have certain travel costs reimbursed – specifically those where a student has to travel for training to a hospital or community health service location and the travel costs are more than their normal day-to-day travel costs to their college.
DISABLED STUDENT’S ALLOWANCES
These are broadly the same as for non-NHS students
NHS HARDSHIP GRANT
A Hardship Grant may be awarded to a student who has exhausted all other sources of financial help and is in serious financial difficulty. Payment will not be made if a Student Loan has not been taken out.
CHILD TAX CREDIT
NHS-funded students who have children should claim Child Tax Credit from HMRC.
