The decision for us to pay rent allowance to a claimant’s nominee (third party payment) is discretionary. What criteria do people use when making such a decision? Do you have a formal policy about this? Have you ever refused to do this, and with what consequences?

We have only ever made a very few of these, as our system was not set up to pay third parties. Now we have a new sytem, which can do it properly, so we are deciding how to proceed!

Any thoughts, procedures, or warnings would be most welcome!

    Hi Ann,

It can be done, but the prospective payee needs to know that they have the same responsibilities and duties as a L/L payee – including potential overpayment recovery.

    Regards
