“how can we reduce the overall benefits bill?”
” I know – lets pay some random pensioners, some random amounts of money and see if they notice”

I like the bit on the DWP website which says “Is this a scam? No absolutely not”.

I’ve tried ringing the dedicated helpline 0800 587 8924 but there is no answer.

On the DWP website it states that the award will not affect any other benefits the customer receives. Does this mean it is also disregarded for HB/CTB purposes. If it is taken into account does anyone know how we will be notified – by Electronic Data transfer or would the customer need to inform us?

    Thanks for any help.

It says in the G Bulletin that it is not a passported benefit and it is disregarded -go figure!

We’re just about to prosecute a customer who came through HBMS as a change of address – in France! Turns out he has a holiday home out there. This is a pension credit claim so not sure why we got it anyway, but it’s just as well we did because the combined overpayment of benefit is £10,000 and counting. If they can’t even pick up on the information they already hold about pensioners’ circumstances I am highly sceptical of their ability to identify unmet need electronically. Can you imagine the outcry if they started sending IS/JSA/ESA payments to working age “never been claimants”. The Daily Mail would never stop going on about it. There really is ageist apartheid in this country (and I speak as somebody who is nearer pension age – as it used to be- than I would like)

Thanks Chris, much appreciated. I can only see it causing confusion and distress to some pensioners who don’t wish to claim anything. it’s going to stress some of them out.

It’s all very well the DWP telling us that this is going to be disregarded in HB/CTB but has anyone heard whether we’re going to get ETDs for these cases and if so how we are going to differentiate them from the real PC claims?!

Yesterday I phoned the helpline published on G17-2010 to ask whether we would receive an ETD.

The advisor I spoke to said we wouldn’t receive an ETD.

I asked if they would be awarded PC(GC) and/or PC(SC) and was told they aren’t going to break it down into those income types but it will simply be known as ‘Pensioner Credit Taster.’
