Prison and temporary absence

    Hi. Quick question. Can a prisoner claim housing benefit after he has been sent to prison? I’m not sure whether they need to claim, prior to being sent to the big house, to satisfy the temporary absence rules.

    Anyone can claim. From anywhere. At any time. They just might not be entitled.

    The only real issues for a claim from a prisoner are those of household / income / temporary absence. And, no matter when a claim is made, the 13/52 weeks is considered from the start of absence – not the HB claim.
