Do any of you require folk to register as Self employed with HMRC before you accept that they are genuinely self employed ? I'm not just interested in the Genuine and effective stuff for EU workers but more generally. It would be interesting to know whether it was an expectation of those claiming tax credits, HMRC couldnt be daft enough to pay TC's to folk that are not also registered as self employed could they ?

HMRC will not accept a SE claim for tax credits until the claimant has a allocated unique tax code. This can be applied for online and will take around two weeks to be allocated. A letter is then sent to the applicant with a code to input to confirm.

Thanks peter – Thought so. I suppose we could be on dodgy grounds insisting on the registration but I think I'm prepared to go with it. I cant see a reasonable argument for not complying with our request that you comply with the Treasury's requirement before we accept that a person is self employed. I must add that I'm not saying that registration demonstrates that it is both genuine and effecrive, but it does add weight.
