I have a self-employed claimant. He travels 70 miles to wash cars, and made a loss of £1,000 last year.
Basically I don’t believe him, but I need something to back up my decision not to pay any HB). Any pointers?

    tax credits.

this guys ‘car wash’ business has been going since 2004. he travels from east london to kent to lose 20 quid a week. is there any case law where an authority has ignored the claimants declared income and ‘guessed’ it’s own????

i did a PINS business records thing on this type of employee and the best thing is to look at his records in full i.e. mileage, receipts for petrol, car insurance to see if he declares business use and the mileage done for business, expenses etc… also look at the mileage on the car?

Come across this before with a guy who was a “window cleaner”
Think about it – says he is in business, claims tax credits, gets to avoid all the job centre and job seeker “tests” and hassle

Is he registered as self employed with the HMCE?
