    Severe Disability Premium query:
    We have a couple both in receipt of ATA and have underlying entitlement to Carers Premium for looking after one another. Neither of them are paid a Carers Allowance due to overlapping SRP. Can you advise if they are both entitled to the SDP?

    I assume you mean AA? if so then yes to the double rate SDP. That’s my understanding. Can’t quote regs or circs but we looked into it last year and drew that conclusion.

    The regs talk about a carer “in receipt of” a carer’s allowance. People who get underlying CA are not in “receipt of it” so bingo – no barrier to SDP.

    The Pension Service also use this rule when awarding their equivalent “additional amount for severe disability” in Pension Credit.
