    Hi
Please can I have some advice – Single parent-
we have a customer who started open university in Jan 06 in Teaching – and was also a full time unqualified music teacher doing a PGCE- who took out a student loan – through the student loans company Ltd. Did not qualify fir the £6000 bursary grant

The customer has been told as she is working the loan is not taken into account – I cannot find anything in the SHAK guide to clarify this – can anyone advise please –
    many thanks

Is she a full-time student with the Open University? If yes, then the loan is taken into account as income, as for any other FT student.

If she is a part-time student (and in my experience many OU students are) the loan will effectively be disregarded as the disregards for books & equipment and travel are greater than the amount of the loan.

How can this be – as her loan(678.15)/grant( 455.00) = £1133.15 is paid April 06 june 06 and nov 06 would not exceed travwl and books etc?
    thanks

That’s not the standard loan amount for a PT student.

If she is a FT student (and it would appear she is from the odd amount of loan she receives) then I know of no provision that says it would be disregarded because she is in remunerative work…treat it the same way as any other loan income for a student. What’s the grant element for? Is it a partial bursary? If yes, apportion over 52 weeks from the start of the course.
