    Hi

I would appreciate any advice, we have a student who 17 years of age and attending a NC course at College but receives no bursary except for travelling expenses.

He does not live with his family and has taken a tenancy as a boarder applying as a student but advises that he only receives occasional handout from his family.

I understand that he has a rental liability but he has no bursary due to the family income I am unsure if this would be assessed on the handout received from the family.

    Thanks

You need to establish if he would be entitled to a grant or loan if he applied for one. If he is then you should take the whole amount into account. If part of that is made up of an assessed parental contribution then you should assess on the basis that this has been paid over.

If he is not entitled to anything then you obviously cannot take it into account, and if there is no assessed parental contribution then the occasional money from parents would seem to be a voluntary payment and therefore disregarded.
