If have been asked about safeguards for those claimants that do not have a bank account and are turned down for one.  Are there alternative methods of payment of UC?

Our local credit union will be hoping to play a major role for people in this situation.

Barclays Bank will open a basic account for anyone, even if they have a poor credit history. I can give a name for anyone in the South East who would like to contact them.

I was talking to someone about the payment card and this is what they said, more or less

“I have a simple payment card for my child support payments and it is the worse system ever. Customers still have to provide the same ID that they would if they had a bank account and worse than that, of the two shops that were listed in my area, one of them said that they knew nothing about the scheme and the other one said that he didn’t have enough money to pay out as he didn’t keep a lot of money in the shop for fear of being robbed!”

    Oh..

Although original information stated that UC could not be paid into post office card accounts we notice that eligibility for UC under the pathfinders includes the requirement that the claimant has a bank account or credit union account or building society account or post office card account. We’re wondering if that means that UC will be payable into POCAs after all? (Might be something to do with post offices starting a new current account soon?)
Either way I would definitely tell people to avoid Simple Payment Card- risks of mugging etc.
Anyone who has any inside info on this please contribute!!

    Further to the above…

Not only does it seem that UC CAN be paid into POCAs – at least in the pathfinders – but in the online claim for UC there is a worrying sentence in the explanatory note attached to the ‘do you have a bank account/’ question – saying that UC cannot be paid into a Credit Union account…..
Again anyone know if this is just for the pathfinders or likely to continue?
    Thanks

I have received a very clear and helpful response through Freedom of Information: here it is if anyone wants to read it.
