Edition no. 106

Addressing future skills needs, encouraging small local businesses to expand and helping local economies meet local needs, are all integral to ensuring continued growth in employment.

November will see the launch of two campaigns intended to help businesses grow and generate new jobs. UKTI’s new Exporting is GREAT roadshow will tour the country helping businesses explore opportunities to export. DWP’s See Potential campaign will look at the retail sector’s approach to diverse recruitment which has helped it to become the UK’s largest private sector employer, contributing 11% to UK economic output in 2014.

This issue also features the first in a series of articles by guest authors. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation discusses how entry level jobs can help people get a foot on the job ladder.

As always, we welcome your feedback so please send us your comments and thoughts about Touchbase. corporate.stakeholders@dwp.gsi.gov.uk and encourage your colleagues to subscribe to Touchbase

Fit for Work employer roadshows launched nationwide

According to accountancy firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers (2013), sickness absence costs UK businesses £29billion per year.

The free occupational health service, Fit for Work, held its first local employer event in Newcastle on Monday 2 November. Attendees at the event included representatives from Newcastle City Council and the Big Lottery Fund.

Stephanie Raper, practice manager from Victoria Medical Practice in Hartlepool, said: “With the rising cost of sickness absence, this proactive approach is a very positive step towards tackling this. The Fit for Work road show was informative and we will certainly be utilising the service for employed patients.”

Eleven more events will take place across England and Wales in the coming weeks.

To sign up for future events, visit the website.
